random inability click buttons and like

I randomly am running into a problem where I can not click on text boxes to type in, or click on buttons like Ok or Cancel. When this happens I have to tab to the the item and press enter if it's a button, if it's a text box, tabbing to it still doesn't help. Any ideas on how to fix this?
as a note, when typing this post, the box underneath this one "Your display name" encountered this probem, the only way I could get to it is click post and it forcing me to type something. The same problem occured for the drop down menu to select which discussion group.
